Got to shoot the MG !

Finally, this past weekend I took my MG-42 out to some farmland to shoot.

MAN ! .....what a hoot, that thing sure does kick for a heavy gun. :bear_w00t:

What's nice is the shell ejection on the bottom ~ makes it super easy to collect your brass. Just don't put your hand down there while firing ~ ouch !

I was reasonably accurate with it shooting about a 4" group at 100-yds on crude iron sights........mind you this was originally full auto so you'd probably want tracers to zero in on your target(s).

One tiny complaint is the buttstock or lack of which isn't too kind to my shoulder but I borrowed a shooter's pad off my buddy which is a must unless you're built like a football player.

:s9:

I envy you,I was a gunner(M1919A6) in my Army days and loved firing the thing...and like your MG,brass did pile up beneath the gun.

thank you for the field report and pics. very nice toys you have.
can the mg42 fire and feed with the belt hanging free, or does it need a smooth horizontal feed from a can right next door? does the belt flail around violently, or just smoothly feed like a conveyor belt?
is all the 8mm linked ammo pretty old? I have to assume the mg42 and other 8mmx57 toys and ammo must have tapered off production pretty soon after the fall of Berlin in 1945.....

Very nice...!!!! Is it hard to get linked ammo? or do you link it up yourself?
Is it full auto?

I used the ammo can lid for support but had the belt feeding vertically up and into the gun like shown in the pics. The belt does move with each shot so I'd recommend always using an ammo can nearby unless you can recruit your own human belt feeder ! ~ :D

I was firing 53 Yugo surplus and every round fired off..........had one shell jam under the bolt but after clearing, everything worked great.

They are 50-rnd Non-Disintegrating belts came with the gun although there's plenty surplus out there. I currently have 4-belts linked together giving me 195-rounds with 5 empty slots for a starter tab.

-Negative on the full auto.......I don't have $40k to spend :bawling: on a legal one.

Welcome to the wonderful world of belt-feds, they are big-fun. Did you build it yourself or buy it? I built a 1919a4 BMG at the begining of the year and I'm using a MG42 tripod modified to fit a BMG. You planning on picking up a tripod for it? You can find them for as low as $100 for a new, post-war AA tripod.

Glad to see another belt-fed gunner here.

Isn't that the irony? Handguns are used for most crimes because they are easily concealable and portable. But it is always the evil looking war rifles they want to ban.

oz in sc 11-07-2008 01:29 PM

Re: Got to shoot the MG !

You start the ban with the small odd looking rifle group.

After that when things do not get better, you sadly have to expand the ban...

And expand....

and finally in the name of the children, ban them all.

And the morons eat it up.

I did quite a bit of research on Tommy Guns which were more rare in action than pistols - even in Capone's gang.

Here's an example - Machine Gun Kelly only used his Tommy 1-time at a gas station for a robbery.........all his other crimes were with a pistol yet the newspapers used 'Machine Gun Kelly' and it stuck ! :banghead:

John Dillinger was the only criminal I found to use the Tommy on a consistent basis.

The majority of Tommy Guns were made for FBI agents (G-men) and after that WW-II and so on.

Yet, to this day it's considered a 'Gangster' weapon..........go figure.

Here's a pic of the 30 cal BMG set up on a MG42 AA tripod, sorry this pick is from my basement/bunker a few months back when I was gutting it. The thing that connects the gun to the tripod is a stabilizer, Ol' Bessy still will swing 360 deg. Also not pictured, is daul 30 cal ammo can holders. One for feeding ammo and other for catching links. The spent shells fall out the bottom.

This is the first gun I built, and my favorite for many reasons. I also have a ammo can that hangs off the side of the gun itself, i need to rig up some sort of leather strap and shoot it like Jesse "the body" in Predator. Originally a 30.06, but was converted to .308 in Izzy.

I'm wondering how many souls were sent to see Ahla with this one.

Don

That is schweeeeet ! ......thanks for sharing :ok:

I like the setup with 30-cal ammo cans on each side. Belt fed guns are really awesome and you can link up as many as you want or need without any worry of magazine changes. However, it's more of a defend-the-fort concept with limited mobility. I LIKE BIG GUNS THOUGH. Although I didn't build mine, she's still my favorite by far.

Yup, jonny Reb is getting ready using Yankee money! Yup, low to no state taxes in "reb" state land means johnny reb's home state needs lots of Federal money to make up for the shortfall. Taxes paid by Yankees like ME thus get funneled to Johnny Reb's state coffers.

This means more disposable income for Jonny Reb (via the low to no state and local taxes) to the detriment of Yankees like me!

You think that bloody anderson would approve of the modern day Johnny Reb stealing like that from the Yankee?

Argent,

If I paid state and local tax at the same % rate you do for even one year, I would have enough $$ for a full auto M42 plus 20 minutes worth of ammo. Then again, I only buy american, so I would be getting a WWII BAR or something

Well, FWIW - there's a Full-Auto 50-cal for sale in my area $55,000.

Or if you like M60's - there's one listed for $45,000.

Really, nothing against where you're at, but I'd be moving South (like Texas) or West (like Wyoming) being the gun nut that I am.
