Got to shoot the MG !
Finally, this past weekend I took my MG-42 out to some farmland to shoot.
MAN ! .....what a hoot, that thing sure does kick for a heavy gun. :bear_w00t: What's nice is the shell ejection on the bottom ~ makes it super easy to collect your brass. Just don't put your hand down there while firing ~ ouch ! I was reasonably accurate with it shooting about a 4" group at 100-yds on crude iron sights........mind you this was originally full auto so you'd probably want tracers to zero in on your target(s). One tiny complaint is the buttstock or lack of which isn't too kind to my shoulder but I borrowed a shooter's pad off my buddy which is a must unless you're built like a football player. :s9: |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !
I envy you,I was a gunner(M1919A6) in my Army days and loved firing the thing...and like your MG,brass did pile up beneath the gun.

Re: Got to shoot the MG !
thank you for the field report and pics. very nice toys you have.
can the mg42 fire and feed with the belt hanging free, or does it need a smooth horizontal feed from a can right next door? does the belt flail around violently, or just smoothly feed like a conveyor belt? is all the 8mm linked ammo pretty old? I have to assume the mg42 and other 8mmx57 toys and ammo must have tapered off production pretty soon after the fall of Berlin in 1945..... |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !
Very nice...!!!! Is it hard to get linked ammo? or do you link it up yourself?
Is it full auto? |

Re: Got to shoot the MG !
NICE!!!:applause_
Would work great on 'zombies',you won't have to reload and you won't burn through too much ammo....:D |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !
Anymore interest in this thread or the pics ?
I'm bumping it but may delete due to security reasons (call me paranoid).......yeah, I'm prolly on a list but still. :bandito: |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !
Welcome to the wonderful world of belt-feds, they are big-fun. Did you build it yourself or buy it? I built a 1919a4 BMG at the begining of the year and I'm using a MG42 tripod modified to fit a BMG. You planning on picking up a tripod for it? You can find them for as low as $100 for a new, post-war AA tripod.
Glad to see another belt-fed gunner here. Don |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !
To think, this will be banned as 'dangerous' under Obama....
Can you imagine someone actually hauling one around robbing people. |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !

Re: Got to shoot the MG !
You start the ban with the small odd looking rifle group.
After that when things do not get better, you sadly have to expand the ban... And expand.... and finally in the name of the children, ban them all. And the morons eat it up. |

Here's an example - Machine Gun Kelly only used his Tommy 1-time at a gas station for a robbery.........all his other crimes were with a pistol yet the newspapers used 'Machine Gun Kelly' and it stuck ! :banghead: John Dillinger was the only criminal I found to use the Tommy on a consistent basis. The majority of Tommy Guns were made for FBI agents (G-men) and after that WW-II and so on. Yet, to this day it's considered a 'Gangster' weapon..........go figure. |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !
a LIST you say? dont worry A.D. if there is a list we are ALL on it.
Does the semiauto modified -42 fire from a closed bolt? |
Re: Got to shoot the MG !
the more on "the list" the better. politicians PREFER unarmed peasants.

Re: Got to shoot the MG !
GunNut : Yes, I'm planning on getting a tripod soon but ammo had a higher priority for now.

Here's a pic of the 30 cal BMG set up on a MG42 AA tripod, sorry this pick is from my basement/bunker a few months back when I was gutting it. The thing that connects the gun to the tripod is a stabilizer, Ol' Bessy still will swing 360 deg. Also not pictured, is daul 30 cal ammo can holders. One for feeding ammo and other for catching links. The spent shells fall out the bottom. This is the first gun I built, and my favorite for many reasons. I also have a ammo can that hangs off the side of the gun itself, i need to rig up some sort of leather strap and shoot it like Jesse "the body" in Predator. Originally a 30.06, but was converted to .308 in Izzy. I'm wondering how many souls were sent to see Ahla with this one. Don |
